Warp Squad 16 were an elite squadron of pilots who helped enforce peace across Alliance territory. For as along as there had been an Alliance, there had been a Warp Squad. When a member died or retired, they were quickly replaced with the next best pilot who was waiting in line in the Reformatory. There was always one pilot from each of the sixteen Alliance planets inside Warp Squad, ensuring fair representation for all inside the Alliance.
However, on the 15th of August, the entire Warp Squad went missing. An investigation was launched into their vanishing which has culminated in the revelations found in Wanderers: Genesis.
You can read the results of the findings and interviews that took place here. But in brief, it was determined that Warp Squad 16 were sent out to meet an unknown threat that was devouring the stars. The threat turned out to be an artificially created wormhole. Warp Squad flew too near and became caught in a gravity-field. With no options left, Warp Squad 16 flew into the anomaly itself.
In doing so, the wormhole fractionalised Warp Squad 16 into the Wanderers.
